Message from Angela Ladetto,

C2ER Chair

Dear C2ER members,

For years, C2ER has offered a wide range of courses that build members’ skills and empowers researchers to meet the needs of their communities. When I started my career more than 20 years ago the first two courses, I took were Foundations of Economic Development Research and Applied Analyst Training, which focus on traditional research method courses. These courses built a foundational knowledge base that I still use today.

Recently, C2ER has developed a series of innovative and creative courses to meet our members’ needs, such as Beginner R Training and Data Visualization with Tableau. Not only are these courses essential for learning the latest tools and trends in economic development, all C2ER courses are crucial for networking with peers and setting them up for career success, which is why we offer them at a significant discount exclusively for members.

Get started on sharpening your skills by joining fellow members at one or all the courses being offered Fall 2023:

Additionally, attending C2ER courses are a great way to work towards earning a Certified Economic Research Professional (CERP) certification. The benefits of becoming a CERP can be significant for your career, your employer and your personal satisfaction. To learn more about obtaining this credential visit our website here.

If you want to stand out from your colleagues and take your career to the next level, I encourage you to register TODAY.

Newly Launched: FRED Data Practitioner Digital Badge Program

C2ER is honored to share the FRED Data Practitioner Digital Badge Program as a resource for its members.

As mentioned on their What is FRED page, FRED (short for Federal Reserve Economic Data) is an online database consisting of hundreds of thousands of economic data time series from scores of national, international, public, and private sources. FRED is created and maintained by the Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and goes far beyond simply providing data: it also combines data with a powerful mix of tools that help the user understand, interact with, display, and disseminate the data. In essence, FRED helps users tell their data stories.

C2ER members can use this tool to credential their skills through this digital badge program that focuses on seven foundational FRED data skills and uses live data from FRED to provide opportunities for hands-on practice and learning.

Spotlight on Incentives

This quarter we look at a very popular C2ER member benefit, The State Business Incentives Database. Which is a searchable database of incentive programs used by states for strategic business attraction. The Business Incentives Database includes more than 1,600 incentive programs across the country categorized: Program Category, Program Type, Geographic Focus, and Business Need. The State Business Incentives Database is an add-on that can be selected as a benefit when joining or renewing your C2ER membership. Take a look at what has been going on with the database below.

Incentives Update: General Trends

As the C2ER State Incentives update comes to a close, we will begin publishing a series of blogs detailing new insights and findings. This first entry will focus on general trends in the Incentives data. Of particular interest this year, is the status of COVID -19 recovery programs which states are winding down. Read more here.

The Importance of Agribusiness in the United States

Almost 18% of the country’s economy and 30% of American jobs are directly or indirectly tied to food and agriculture, making the agribusiness industry a cornerstone of the American economy. Although the primary output of the industry is livestock and crops, the industry offers including the support of livelihood through food, the production of raw materials for food and other products, and sustaining society’s need of nutritional support. States employ several programs and incentives to support the need for food, farmers, and farming equipment. The State Business Incentive Database, published by C2ER, tracks incentive programs, including those that focus on the development of a sustainable agriculture workforce, industry innovations, and financial resources to ease the cost of operating farms. Read more here.

Regional Trends in State Business Incentives Programs

To maintain a competitive edge in attracting businesses, states develop their incentive programs to build on current strengths or fill gaps in economic development. Since incentive programs are catered to the needs of each state, regions’ programs differ in structure, type, and size. The specifics of a program may ultimately be the deciding factor for a business looking to locate or relocate. Read more here.
