Credential Engine Releases Largest Most Comprehensive Count of Secondary and Postsecondary Credentials in US
Credential Engine today released the latest results of the largest and most comprehensive count of secondary and postsecondary credentials in the United States. The report, “Counting U.S. Postsecondary and Secondary Credentials,” estimates that there are 967,734 unique credentials in the United States across 16 categories—including both traditional degrees, certificates, certifications, licenses, apprenticeships, and badges.
These data—along with a reported $1.921 trillion yearly expenditures in education and training in the U.S. from educational institutions, employers, federal grant programs, states, and the military—underscore the need for a greater understanding of what these credentials mean: the skills they represent, their associated costs, the job and earnings outcomes they lead to, where they can be attained, and so on. The credential landscape is vast—perhaps larger than many imagined—and it continues to grow. We need to use these data as a motivator to work towards widespread adoption of a standard approach for describing, comparing and evaluating credentials and competencies. Read more.

National Convening: Jobs Data for Evidence-Based Policy and Practice
Please join leaders from across the country – from government agencies, philanthropic foundations, research organizations, and legislatures – to a national convening on Jobs Data for Evidence-Based Policy and Practice to be held virtually on March 3rd and 4th, 2021, from approximately 11:00 AM – 4:30 PM ET.
The COVID pandemic has brought home the importance of timely, locally-relevant data and evidence, particularly in the context of jobs and economic opportunity. Much data are in state agencies, such as Departments of Labor, Education, Human Services, and Corrections. States have been developing new and successful collaboratives that make use of these data by sharing information in secure facilities and developing applied training programs. The goal is to build sustainable state-driven collaboratives that focus on local needs while enabling a truly national data infrastructure to evolve.
