BR|E Benchmarking Challenge 2022

March 1 – May 15, 2022

Benchmarks are vital to our understanding of local issues. They provide context. CREC in association with C2ER, Business Retention and Expansion International (BREI), and the Synchronist User Community are continuing the national benchmarking project; with YOUR help. Our goal is to interview 2,000 primary (or ‘traded’) sector business executives to gauge the health of our most important community assets, primary sector businesses and the challenges they face.
We also seek to set national and, hopefully, regional benchmarks for critical issues we discuss in business retention. Issues like workforce, employment recovery, business growth, plans to expand, growth barriers, and community issues.

Credential Engine Prospectus:
State Counting Credentials Reports

Industry needs skilled workers to fill in-demand jobs, and states must work with education and training providers to develop those skills more efficiently. To align state investments in education and training more closely with industry demand, states need a better understanding of what programs they are currently investing in and how well they are doing in meeting the needs of a fast-changing economy.
Credential Engine, in partnership with the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness, has produced a series of reports (“Counting U.S. Postsecondary and Secondary Credentials”) that have become the authoritative accounts of the rapidly changing credentialing landscape in the United States.

Now Available! First Quarter 2021 Cost of Living Index Released

Kicking off the first quarter of the Cost of Living Index we highlight the cost of a haircut for men.

Image by Andrea Donato from Unsplashed

Since the start of the pandemic, the process of getting a haircut has gone through rapid change and shops across the U.S. coped with the new reality by implementing sanitation fees, decreasing the number of clients see at once, just to name a few. With increased demand in conjunction with additional safety measures, the haircut prices have increased. Now with the country beginning to reopen, it is important to highlight how the price of a haircut has shifted. To examine female or longer haircuts, check out the “Beauty Salon” price in the full dataset.

C2ER Issues Its First Merit Award
Over the past year one of the things we missed in the office were the “watercooler” conversations. It’s here we would talk and share, among other topics, cool content that we had seen. The downside of those moments was we couldn’t actually see what the person was talking about.
Well that changed in 2020 as we filled chats and emails with “Hey did you see this? It’s very cool”. It was one of those emails that led us to the idea of awarding content we discover, which brings us to the first of “Content That Makes Us Go WOW!“

On May 18th C2ER presented its first Merit Award to Aaron Hill and Christianity Today for their work using data from the Cost of Living Index. As one of our subscribers, we are thankful for their partnership and truly impressed by the application of the COLI data and accompanying narrative that explained the benefits and limitations of the data.
One of our favorite analogies used to describe how the data doesn’t measure inflation is “COLI is kind of like a picture of boats on the sea. You can use the picture to calculate the relative height of boats but not whether the sea level is rising.”
