The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Economist within the Division of Policy, Research & Government Affairs’ Research Unit. The primary responsibilities are to direct and/or perform economic research analyses of complex regional and national economic issues; monitor and analyze the performances of national and regional economies; and develop macroeconomic models of the state and local economies for the purposes of economic impact analysis. Incumbent will develop and maintain appropriate standards for analyzing complex developmental projects; research and analyze policy issues affecting the state’s commerce and industry; design, develop, and maintain economic databases; monitor multiple data sources for economic and demographic trends; disseminate economic findings to agency’s boards/commissions and external stakeholders through presentations, reports, articles, briefings.

The selected employee will possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with and maintain effective working relationships with high level public and private sector officials. Excellent written and oral communications skills and be able to communicate complex economic issues to the public; strong analytic and research skills and have a broad knowledge of government and non-government information resources. The ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high-priority projects and possess proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows including Word, Excel,
Access, and PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software. Familiarity with statistical software and economic impact models such as IMPLAN, REMI or RIMS is preferred.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Economics or related field AND at least six (6) years of experience in economics or a closely related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications:
1) Possession of an advanced degree in Economics.
2) Knowledge of and work experience in economic theory as applied to public policy issues; application of statistical/econometric packages and economic impact analysis.
3) Experience with statistical software and economic impact models such as IMPLAN, REMI or RIMS.
