The “Foundations of Economic Development Research: Introduction to Data Sources” eLearning is a three-hour course, led by a team of expert analysts who will guide you through the basics of economic development research and analysis. Course exercises show you how to address real-world questions that policymakers and practitioners encounter.
The course will equip you to:
- Access, collect, and organize key data from primary federal sources.
- Discover other important datasets from public and private sources.
- Apply fundamental techniques for regional data analysis.
- Conduct labor market analysis.
- Perform competitive market intelligence research.
- Use U.S. Census Bureau tools to map regional employment data.
- Use your analysis to tell a compelling story to policymakers.

The Basic LMI Analyst course is a four-and-a-half-hour course that will provide novice labor market information (LMI) analysts with an introduction to LMI and basic analytical methods that support state and regional workforce development strategies. You will learn how labor market information is used, collected, and applied as well as your role in the labor market information process.
The course will equip you to:
- Collect, analyze, and interpret labor market information.
- Use core LMI programs such as QCEW to build an understanding of your regional workforce questions.
- Analyze population and demographics, local employment dynamic, industry sectors and occupations.
- Use federal education to tell a complete workforce data story.
- Use LMI in a variety of different scenarios to answer real-world questions.
