The California Department of Finance is hiring for a Research Data Manager in the Forecasting Division! The Research Data Manager will direct, manage, and review the work of the Economic Research Unit with producing the official economic forecasts for the state of California. The Economic Research Unit within Forecasting is responsible for the official economic forecasts for California, and the Chief Economist is the state’s recognized economic expert.This is a Hybrid-Based Position, which requires employees to work in our Downtown Sacramento office for a minimum of two days during the workweek.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct, manage, and review the work of the Economic Research Unit with producing the official economic forecasts for the state of California and other work products.
  • Ensure data is accurate, analysis is complete and follows Finance writing style guidelines.
    • Including, but is not limited to: economic research projects, developing state-wide and regional economic analysis models, updating economic data and maintaining the economic forecast.
  • Assist the Chief Economist with the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, managing meetings and keeping members informed of critical economic issues, and planning and participating in economic forecast conferences.
  • Present economic data and information to interested parties and at events.
  • Participate in the research initiatives of the Forecasting Unit, Finance, and the Governor’s Office.
  • Functions as the lead reviewer for impact assessments of major regulations in the Economic Research Unit, including filling in for the Chief Economist on regulatory issues.
  • Participate in ongoing reviews, develop process improvements for regulatory reviews and oversee regulations review process.
  • Completing reviews of impact assessments, manages the outreach and training program to state agencies, and supervises the Research Data Specialists assigned to regulatory reviews.
  • Co-operates closely with the Demographic and Revenue teams, as well as Finance Budget Units to ensure state agencies follow Finance regulations; impact assessments cover the main economic impacts of the proposed regulation; and policy and budgeting implications are understood by appropriate staff in Finance and across the state.
