Position Summary

The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research is seeking a talented Research Analyst to conduct projects in regional and community development and support the Regional Economic Development team of the Regional Economic and Community Development group. The Regional Research Analyst conducts applied research projects, including downloading and conducting statistical analyses of socioeconomic data, writing reports, meeting with clients and participating in methodology and public policy development. This position is responsible for conducting applied economic analyses from local to national levels. Communication mediums include written content, data visualizations, and presentations.

This position requires in-person work, living within the Kalamazoo area.

Position Requirements

A Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in economic development, planning, economics, statistics, or other business or social science field is required. At least one year of experience in applied research or economic development is preferred.

Knowledge of statistical methods, econometric methods, and regional analyses is required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Experience with at least one statistical programming language – preferably Stata – is essential, as is a basic understanding of socio-economic data, data processing, and applied research. A good level of technical writing is also required, and experience with writing research reports and literature reviews is a plus. Knowledge of GIS, R, IMPLAN, REMI, Python, or other programing languages is a plus. Proficiency in qualitative research, project management, and evaluation are desirable.

Must possess an understanding of data analysis and a critical eye for detail.

About the Regional Economic and Community Development Group

Two teams comprise the Regional Economic and Community Development Group; the Regional Economic Development team focuses on applied economic and technical assistance and addresses issues in regional economies, economic development, workforce/occupational development, evaluation, and economic impact modeling and analysis. The regional team provides economic outlook presentations inside and outside of Michigan and annual economic and employment analyses for Southwest Michigan’s metropolitan regions. The Community Development team leads collaborative efforts in communities in Southwest Michigan, working in a variety of areas, including education, poverty reduction, and housing, among others.

Starting annual salary for this position is $55,000 – $58,000 based on experience. The Institute offers a generous benefits package.
