Position Summary

As a Research Analyst for The Upjohn Institute’s Regional Economic and Community Development team, you will conduct projects relating to regional and community development initiatives in support of the team. You will carry out applied research projects, including downloading and conducting statistical analyses of socioeconomic data, participating in conducting interviews and focus groups, writing and editing reports, formatting large documents, and contributing to literature review, methodology, and public policy development. You will be participating in applied economic analyses from local to national levels. Communication mediums include written content, data visualizations, document formatting, and occasional presentations.

You will be working onsite at our office in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with the option of occasional remote work. Therefore, the candidate will reside within driving distance of Kalamazoo.

Position Requirements

A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in economic development, planning, economics, statistics, or other business or social science fields is required. At least one year of relevant experience in applied research or economic development is preferred. Excellent writing skills, knowledge of statistical methods, econometric methods, and regional analyses are required, along with knowledge and practical experience in editing and document formatting, preferably with professional software. Experience with at least one statistical programming language, preferably Stata, is essential, as is a basic understanding of socio-economic data, data processing, and applied research. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Must possess an understanding of data analysis and a critical eye for detail. Experience with writing technical research reports and literature reviews is a plus. Knowledge of R, IMPLAN, REMI, GIS, Python, SAS or other programing languages is preferred. Proficiency in qualitative research, project management, and evaluation are desirable.
