    Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA)
    Phoenix, AZ

The Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) is seeking to hire an experienced research analyst with a background in economics for its Economic Development Research Team (EDR team).

The Arizona Commerce Authority is the state's leading economic development organization. ACA focuses its efforts on recruiting companies in targeted industries to Arizona; working with companies in Arizona to expand; and nurturing young companies and the entrepreneurial ecosystem to ensure a next generation of technologies takes root and develops in Arizona. As an employer, ACA offers competitive wages, excellent benefits and a mission-driven environment that supports professional growth.

The EDR team is a small, highly collaborative team that produces innovative, bespoke research to support business attraction and expansion efforts and marketing campaigns and helps ACA devise the best strategies for achieving its goals. The team conducts research about business costs, workforce availability and pipeline, trade and foreign direct investment. The EDR team also develops and maintains profiles of key industries, reports detailing tax and regulatory competitiveness and maps and data visualizations of a plethora of economic data. We strive to provide data-driven products that are accurate, well contextualized and actionable.

We are looking for an experienced research analyst with sound judgment, the ability to extract what is important from a mountain of numbers and the essential skill of being able to explain complicated data clearly to a non-technical audience, including non-economist colleagues, legislators and the general public. It is not enough to be able to work well with the data: You must be able to explain it elegantly and simply so that others may act upon it.

We're looking for someone who can work quickly, often on multiple projects in the same day, often changing direction on short notice—while maintaining high standards for data accuracy, process consistency and presentation quality. We're looking for someone who can quickly adapt to our standards and processes—and then help us improve our game.

We're looking for someone who not only can work well with others, but who enjoys it. We work closely with many internal clients, plus every deliverable the EDR team produces is checked by another team member who did not work on it, so at least two EDR team members handle every project. Often, projects are broken down into pieces to achieve faster completion, requiring team members to coordinate efforts and work together to reassemble information into a coherent whole. That said, there are times the person in this position will need to carry a project from beginning to end largely independently.

We're looking for someone who is less interested in esoteric economic theory and more interested in finding new ways to identify and use a wide variety of data to formulate answers to challenging questions when no single, obvious answer exists. This is where we are truly innovative.

The EDR team values its collaborative, informal and low-drama culture and is looking for a new member who will value and uphold that culture as well.
