Effective data visualizations can communicate highly complex information in digestible terms where words often cannot. Delivering such products is not so simple. Experts from the Michigan Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives and the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness will pose and answer critical investment questions, based on their experience creating data visualization tools for economic and workforce development audiences. Participants will learn how different organizations formulate and implement strategies for developing high-value, sustainable data visualization tools.

The Spatial Structure of American Employment

The U.S. Census Bureau and the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership in collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) welcomes Dr. Robert Manduca. Dr. Manduca will demonstrate how LODES data may be used to examine the concentration of suburban employment and present a method for identifying employment subcenters. He will also present a web visualization tool for the LODES data available online at http://www.robertmanduca.com/projects/jobs.html. Designed as a complement to OnTheMap, this visualization allows users to gain a quick overview of the highly complex patterns of employment within their metropolitan area.
