This 2.5-day course provides novice community and economic development researchers with an introduction to key data sources, tools, and research methods used to support state and regional economic development strategies. Through engaging discussions and hands-on exercises, participants will gain exposure to a variety of economic, demographic, and workforce data and apply basic analytical skills to answer real-world questions that policy makers and practitioners encounter. Topics covered in this course include:
- Understanding core economic & other data sources
- Identifying economic drivers
- Analyzing populations & assessing workforce capacity
- Comparing regional economies
- Communicating effectively with customers
While there is no pre-requisite for this course, some experience with Excel formulas and functions is strongly recommended. The training will run from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday and Tuesday and from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM Wednesday.
Target Audience: This course is designed for novice community and economic development researchers. Beginners in related fields, such as labor market analysis and workforce development, are encouraged to attend our Basic Labor Market Information (LMI) Analyst course. The next Basic LMI Analyst course will be held in Sacramento, CA in Fall 2019.
