C2ER 50th ANNUAL CONFERENCE

C2ER is celebrating 50 YEARS of service to the field of community and economic research. Since those heady days of the early 1960s, the organization has been at the forefront of developing expertise for policy leaders and practitioners on how to understand the economic trends affect their communities. This year’s Annual Conference offers a unique learning experience to gain a national perspective, learn about emerging trends, gain new technical and management skills, and tap a network of other like-minded persons from state and local economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, utilities, workforce development groups, regional planning organizations, applied academic research centers, and federal agencies.

C2ER OFFICES HAVE MOVED

After ten years in our old location, C2ER has moved its offices to a new, more convenient location.  On Friday, February 12, C2ER staff began the process of packing up the old office to get ready for the move on the 13th.  This was a larger task than many realize given that the Washington DC/Northern Virginia metro area received over 50 inches of snow that week.

LMI TRAINING SCHEDULE

As the Sacramento CA LMI training program concludes, we’d like to remind you of the programs that are still on the schedule.

ARIZONA LABOR MARKET INFORMATION IMPROVEMENT CONTRACT

In response to a request from the Arizona Department of Commerce, C2ER proposed, and was awarded, a contract to coordinate a series of research studies, data collection efforts, and data dissemination initiatives designed to improve the state’s understanding of its “green economy.”  This 18-month project will provide the state’s policy makers with a more thorough understanding of the industries and occupations that may serve as the foundation for an emerging green jobs sector.

CBO’S ESTIMATED ECONOMIC AND EMPLOYMENT IMPACT OF ARRA

This month the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its quarterly American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) report detailing the Act’s economic and employment impact between October and December 2009. As part of any funding received, recipients must provide a quarterly estimate of the number of jobs that were created or retained because of ARRA. The CBO report utilizes these reported data and then attempts to devise projections that account for impact not reflected in these reports.

HOUSING IN AMERICA: THE NEXT DECADE

Housing markets in the United States are in a state of turmoil.  As the economy recovers, markets will stabilize but the old “normal” will not return. New trends will emerge as major drivers, creating markets in new places. Those who fail to understand these new trends will miss opportunities or find themselves building what is no longer in demand.  This is the analysis presented in a paper by John McIlwain, Senior Resident Fellow at the Urban Land Institute, presented at the ULI Trustees’ Meeting in January, 2010.  The paper provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of the housing market in the United States in three major parts.
