Economic Development Organization Survey

Would you like to benchmark your economic development efforts against your peers? Do you need to know how your organization compares with what other economic development organizations (EDOs) are doing? How much do EDCs, chambers, regional planning groups, and others budget for economic development? What are the salaries of top staff -- and how does that differ by organization types? What functions or activities are EDOs taking on and what are some the newest trends?

ACCRA has published this survey of nearly 800 Economic Development Organizations (EDOs) and identified a few important facts. The study examines median budgets by type of organization, staffing, and the salaries of respondents. Some of the notable results include:

  • Survey respondents reported an average wage of $71,962, a 5 percent increase from 2005.
  • The average salary for CEOs was $78,941 in 2006, rising 9 percent from 2005. Overall, EDOs dedicated an average of 3.35 Full Time
  • Equivalent (FTE) employees to economic development, 0.41 FTEs to ED research and 0.51 FTE to policy or planning.
  • Forty-three (43 percent) of all EDOs dedicate funds to economic development research, an increase from 31 percent that reported funding for research in 2005.
  • Per capita spending on economic development increased by 13 percent from 2005.
  • About 85 percent of respondents have earned at least a Bachelor's degree.

If you need to know how your economic development function compares with your counterparts, then you need the vital information in this report.
